Description
The Old School Cottages are a group of six almshouses, now reduced to four, dating from 1651. They are constructed of squared coursed lias stone with an artificial stone slate roof and were originally designed as single-storey units. Each unit features a three-light restored stone mullion window with 20th-century glazing. The doors, which are ribbed and from the 19th century, are arranged in pairs beneath flat stone arches with keystones.
Attached to the left is a school room, likely built in the early 19th century, which has a two-window range in a similar style. The buildings have ashlar parapets and brick stacks at the ridge. The rear elevation mirrors the front, with paired entrances and sash windows set in stone mullions. An inscribed tablet on the rear states, "Endowed by Sir John Langham Bart. Anno Domini 1651." The right gable features 17th-century gable parapets and kneelers, along with a moulded string course below. There is also an original tablet dated 1651 in the gable.
