Description
Honeysuckle Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage located in Stapleford Abbotts. It features a timber frame, weatherboarding, and is partly rendered, with a roof made of handmade clay tiles. The building consists of two bays aligned approximately east to west, and has an external brick chimney stack at the eastern end, facing north. There is a single-storey extension at the western end, added around 1929. The cottage is single-storey with attics, and the southern elevation is plastered over the weatherboards, featuring two 20th-century windows. The entire building, including the roof, is covered with creeper. Inside, there is a plain-chamfered axial beam with Lamb's tongue stops, and exposed joists that are unchamfered and of vertical section, along with primary straight bracing. The current brick chimney stack is of the wood-burning type and includes a bread oven with a cast iron door on the south side; however, this chimney is later than the cottage and likely replaces an original timber-framed chimney in the same position. The 20th-century windows, while modern, fit within the original window openings and are small in scale, consistent with the cottage's character. This cottage is an unusually well-preserved example of a simple vernacular dwelling from its period.
