Description

This is a late 17th-century cottage, extended in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber-framed, with roughcast rendering and a weatherboarded lower portion, and has a roof of handmade red clay tiles. The cottage is approximately two bays wide, aligned north-east to south-west, and faces south-east. It has an axial chimney stack at the south-west end. The original section is single-storey with attics, while an early 18th-century two-storey extension stands to the south-west, itself later extended to the north-west and further to the south-west. The south-east elevation features one halved boarded door, one plain 19th-century door, and five 20th-century casement windows. The first floor has one 20th-century casement window and another within a gabled dormer. The roof is hipped at the south-west end. Internal framing is visible, with arched braces to tiebeams and wallplates, not trenched. The mantel beam of the original hearth is plain chamfered with lamb’s tongue stops. Some original floorboards remain. Within the latest south-west extension, a former exterior wall is enclosed, bearing vernacular pargeting shaped as a star, an unusual survival.
