Description
Shrubb Farm Cottages is a late 17th-century cottage constructed with a timber frame, rendered clay lump, and a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, featuring two doorways positioned to the right and left of the center, each with brick surrounds. The ground floor has three casement windows, while the upper floor has four, all evenly spaced. The roof has an overhang with central and right gable ridge stacks. The south gable includes 20th-century windows on the first two floors, and there is a coping string course at the roof line beneath a single attic window, which is topped with a hood string course. The bargeboards are plain.
At the rear, there is a two-storey gabled privy tower with small casements, the lower ones dating from the 20th century. To the right, there is an 18th-century lean-to extension, and to the left, a 20th-century extension. A two-storey wing to the north is built in the same style as the main block, with various 20th-century windows in the original openings. The north gable wall has been rebuilt with random brick on the ground floor, with clay lump above, and the chimney has been renewed.
Inside, the ground floor south room features chamfered end-stopped beams and an original fireplace with a brick surround. Most of the timber framing in the interior remains intact. The staircase is located in the chimney breast, and the roof structure includes principals and secondary rafters, with collars that have clasped purlins above and butt purlins below. This cottage is notable as an early example of clay lump construction.
