Description

Tudor Cottage is a late 17th-century cottage located on Pebmarsh Road in Alphamstone. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a roof of handmade red clay tiles. It consists of two bays set at right angles to the road, with a central chimney stack. A lean-to porch is situated on the right side, while a 20th-century lean-to extension and single-storey wing are located on the left. The cottage has one storey with attics. The front features a single range of 20th-century casement windows with diamond leading, one additional window in the lean-to extension, and a plain boarded door within the porch. Old plaster displays sawtooth indentations. Inside, there are chamfered axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, though these have been sand-blasted in the front room. Original exposed framing is visible, and a portion of the original wattle remains exposed in the left wall. The original hearth includes apertures for a bread oven that has since been removed. An original newel stair is located beside the chimney stack, and there are some wide rebated floorboards on the upper floor. It represents an unusually unaltered example of its type.
