Description

ALPHAMSTONE TL 83 SE 4/2 Abbot's Farmhouse II House. Early C17, altered in Picturesque style and extended in early C19. Timber framed, clad with flint and red brick, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned NE-SW with central chimney stack. 2-storey lean-to extension to NW, and single-storey extension beyond. 2-storey brick extensions to NE and SE, forming a T-plan. Slate-roofed porch in S angle. SW elevation, in main block 2-window range of Gothick sashes with interlaced tracery under 2-centred heads, with crown glass. Above, 2 blind loops and asymmetrical gable with moulded parapet. In SE extension, one sash of 12 lights and one of 16 lights on each floor, with crown glass. All windows early C19, C20 door. On right return of main block, crenellated parapet. 2 chimney stacks with grouped diagonal shafts. The interior of the original block has jowled posts, chamfered beams with lamb's tongue stops, clasped purlin roof. Formerly known as Ivy Cottage, but earlier probably the manor held by the Abbot of Edmundsbury. Moated site. RCHM 6.
