Description
Heyes is a cottage located on Pebmarsh Road, dating from the late 17th century and extended in the 18th to early 19th century. It features a timber frame that is plastered, with some exposed framing, and has a thatched roof. The cottage has three bays facing southeast, with a chimney stack positioned in the right bay. A rear extension, built in the 18th to early 19th century, creates a T-plan layout. The building is one storey with attics, and it includes three 20th-century casement windows with diamond leading, along with an additional casement in a slated gabled dormer. A 20th-century door is set within a gabled porch.
Inside, the cottage has a floor supported by heavy joists of horizontal section laid laterally on pegged clamps, although some pegs have been replaced with 20th-century bolts in the same holes. There is a large wood-burning hearth made of 16th-century bricks, which has been reduced in width for coal use and partly rebricked in the 19th and 20th centuries. A carved plaque reading 'ANNO 1647' is mounted above the front door; while it is genuine, its provenance is uncertain.
