Description
Randalls Cottages, originally marked as Randalls Farm, is a house that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the 17th century but was refaced in the 18th century. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a tile roof. It features a three-window range and an off-centre stack, which reflects the layout of a three-celled early 17th-century timber-framed house. The windows include sashes and casements, with segment-headed windows on the ground floor and straight, plain reveals on the upper floor. The front door of the eastern cottage is located in its original lobby-entrance position, while the western door and stack were added to create a separate cottage.
Inside the western cottage (No. 1), there are deep sectioned joists with diminished haunched soffit tenons connecting to an axial joist. The roof features a butt side purlin type that extends around the corner via a principal diagonal tie-beam joist into the northern wing. The 18th-century re-roofing displays excellent craftsmanship. A straight joint in the brickwork indicates that the timber frame at the front and sides was replaced with brick before the back was altered.
