Description
The Parish Church of St Mary dates to 1850 and was designed by Sydney Smirke. It is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and has a gabled slate roof. The church comprises a barn-like nave and a lower, articulated chancel, both with small, corner-angled buttresses. A tower is located to the southwest, featuring a pointed entrance arch and a square base that transitions to a broached octagonal bell stage capped with an octagonal copper-clad spire. Windows are generally paired with trefoiled heads, though the east window is of simplified geometrical design with three lights and three circles above. The west window has three lancet-like openings, with smaller circular lights positioned separately. Three gabled dormers are incorporated into the north nave roof slope. A 20th-century vestry and ancillary block adjoins the east end of the north side. Internally, the nave and chancel have arch-braced collar and open trussed roofs springing from corbel blocks. A chamfered chancel arch is present, lacking capitals. Funerary hatchments are displayed on the spandrels of the arcade.
