Description

This is a coal duty boundary post located opposite The Boundary on Debden Lane and Loughton Lane, dated 1861 and cast by Henry Grissell. The post is made of white painted cast iron and has a square column with chamfered corners and a pyramidal top. Just below the top, on the necking, there is a shield divided into quarters by a red raised cross, featuring a red dagger in the top left quarter, which forms the City of London crest. The raised inscription on the column reads ‘4 & 25 VICT / CAP 42’, referencing the 1861 London Coal and Wine Duties Continuance Act. The base of the marker is hidden by earth.
