Pond House

Pond House is a 16th century house with earlier remnants inside, located on Boxted Church Road. The building has two storeys and features a timber frame that is plastered, with a ground storey of partly Flemish-bond brick where former jetties have been underbuilt. The roofs are ridged and hipped, topped with four red brick chimney stacks, and the overall plan is L-shaped with two short wings. The south front was originally jettied along its full length but is now underbuilt. There is a central chimney stack with a square plan, and the existing windows are modern casements. The east elevation includes a flat-roofed addition on the ground storey that spans the full length, featuring a reproduction fluted door case and wooden casement, along with a range of casements on the first storey. Inside, there is significant evidence of good timber-framing, including former jetties along the north wall. The south-west roof has a notably robust heavy frame with serpentine collars for every four common rafters. The soot-encrusted rafters from an earlier open hall have been reused east of the chimney stack, which is made of narrow bricks and dates back to possibly the time of Henry VIII.
