Description
Little Waltham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1922, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite with lead lettering and is situated on The Street in Little Waltham. The memorial is set within a plot bordered by soft landscaping on the sides and rear, located at the edge of a larger green area alongside the River Chelmer.
The memorial features a wheel-head cross made of granite, which stands on a tapering shaft rising from a plinth that is placed on a square base. The front face of the plinth has a recessed panel that displays the dedication: "LITTLE WALTHAM. TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THESE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919," along with the names of those who died in that conflict. The left face of the plinth includes a recessed panel with the dedication: "ALSO IN MEMORY OF THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF 1939 – 1945," listing the names of those who perished during the Second World War.
