Description
Flitwick War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920 and includes later additions. The entire memorial is made of granite and is located at the junction of Kings Road and Station Road in the center of the town.
The memorial features a Celtic cross with a sword carved in relief on its front (northwest) elevation. Below the cross, the plinth is inscribed with the words: ‘IN GRATEFUL AND GLORIOUS MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FOUGHT, AND OF THE FOLLOWING WHO / FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918’, along with the names of 29 individuals who fell during the war.
It is set upon a two-stepped base, which has a tablet added after the Second World War. This tablet is inscribed with the words: ‘ALSO IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL / IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945’, along with the names of 14 individuals who fell in that conflict.
