Description

The barn located to the west of Sandon Hall dates from the late 17th century. It is timber framed and features weatherboarding, with roofs made of plain tiles on the west side and corrugated asbestos on the east side.

On the exterior, the west side has a 20th-century outshut to the north of the central transept entrance. The transept includes double timber doors to the south and has a hipped roof. The walls south of the transept are built in brick and contain one 20th-century fixed window with six panes. The roof is gabled, with half-hipped sections to the north and south. The east side has a full-length 20th-century outshut made of Fletton brick and features seven roof lights from the same period. There are 19th-century timber-framed and brick outshuts on the north and south returns, both weatherboarded and with half-hipped roofs.

Inside, the barn has five timber-framed bays with jowled principal studs and a middle rail, which support tie beams on arched braces (two of which have been replaced with straight ones). The roof features queen-post trusses, collars, and one tier of clasped purlins set within undiminished principals. The west flank has infill and studs below the middle rail removed, with the remainder lined with asbestos over the frame. The east transept is roofed with principals, secondaries, and one tier of purlins clasped with one straight collar.
