Description
Sandon Place is a 16th-century timber-framed and plastered house that has been significantly altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, yet it still retains its original half H plan shape, along with some additions. The cross wings at the east and west ends project out on the first storey and feature a four-window arrangement of double-hung sashes with glazing bars, arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. A central early 19th-century portico with fluted Tuscan columns and pilasters supports a flat modillion cornice hood. The doorcase includes a reeded architrave with roundels. The roof is covered with slate, and there is a coved plaster eaves cornice on the central block. At the rear, there is a chimney stack dating from the 16th to 17th century, along with another older chimney stack at the east end. Sandon Place is part of a group that includes the Church of St Andrew, the outbuildings at Sandon Place, The Forge, the Post Office and Cottage east of the Post Office, Woodhill Road, and The Crown Inn at Sandon Green.
