Description
The barn at Wood Hall, dating from the 16th or 17th century, is constructed of red Flemish bond brick and features a thatched roof. It is an undivided barn with double transepts. The north face is characterized by whitewashed brickwork and two projecting gabled transepts, which now have clapboarding on the gables. A 19th-century lean-to shed runs along the entire side. On the south front, the left-hand projecting transept seems to have never had double doors, while there is a low doorway on the right with a 20th-century cement lintel above a band of three bricks. The gable displays tumbled brickwork. The right-hand transept has been reduced to ground floor level and now has a lean-to roof. Between the two transepts is an open store supported by wooden posts. The east gable end features a projecting plinth and a section of wall with six rectangular breathers, along with a band of three bricks below the gable that has two breathers. The west gable face mirrors the east but includes a 20th-century entrance with double doors on the right.
Inside, the roof consists of 12 bays, each with principals and collars, and alternate bays featuring tie beams. Windbracing is arranged in pairs at the far ends and to the left and right of the center. The wall plates extend across the transepts, and the principals and common rafters descend to meet them, indicating that the transept roofs do not appear to have been later additions.
