Description
The Women's Institute is a row of three cottages, now converted into a meeting hall. It dates from the 16th or 17th century, with 19th-century additions and alterations. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick and has a 20th-century plain tile roof, which was originally thatched.
The structure is single-storey with an attic. The entrance front features early 19th-century walling. The two cottages on the right have a higher ridge than the one on the left. There are three doorways with cambered heads, each with plank doors, positioned to the right of the center, and to the right and left. Cambered-headed two-light windows are located at the far right, far left, and right of center. To the left of the near-central doorway are three windows; one on the left has a cambered head and two casement lights but was formerly a doorway, now partially bricked up. To the right of this is a two-light casement window with a flat-arched head, followed by a single-light window with a similar head.
The attic features two raking dormer windows, with the left one having four-by-three sash panes and the right one having seven-by-three panes, both dating from the 20th century. There is a ridge chimney stack on the right with two pots and a single-flued stack on the left-hand cottage. The left gable end has a half-hipped roof, while the right has a projecting brick plinth and rendered walling. The left gable end is similar, with a single-light cambered-headed window.
At the rear, the building is rendered except for the plinth, which shows 16th-century bricks with later patching in 19th-century bricks and cement blocks. There are single-light windows at the extreme right and left, a two-light 20th-century window to the left of center, and a three-light 19th-century casement on the right.
Inside, there are wall posts on the rear wall and a blocked window, as well as chamfered tie beams and ceiling beams.
