Description
The Bear Inn is a 16th century timber-framed and plastered building located in Stock the Square. It features a cross wing at the east end and has undergone alterations, particularly in the 18th century. A later gabled wing was added to the west end, and the building was renovated in the 20th century. The inn has two storeys and a four-window range, with casement windows that have glazing bars on the first storey and double hung sashes with glazing bars on the ground storey. The east wing includes a small canted bay, while a large bay projects from the central block. The roof is tiled. Inside, there are notable 16th century ceiling beams and joists. The Bear Inn is part of a group that includes No 1 and Nos 2 to 14 (even) on Mill Road, as well as The Cock Inn on High Street.
