Description
This barn, located 40 metres south-east of The Hyde Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The barn has three bays aligned northeast-southwest and features a midstrey to the southeast. There is a 19th-century lean-to extension in the eastern angle, which is roofed with corrugated iron, and a 20th-century lean-to extension in the southern angle, which has a catslide roof made of handmade red clay tiles that aligns with the roof of the midstrey. The entrance to the midstrey is closed with weatherboards and includes a plain boarded small door, along with a 20th-century casement window above 20th-century halved double doors on the northwest side.
Inside, the barn has a hardwood frame with unjowled posts and primary straight bracing. The studs below the girts are tenoned and pegged, while above the girts, only the braces and main studs are tenoned and pegged. There is a red brick plinth in English bond, and the structure features face-halved and bladed scarfs, straight tie-beams, raking struts, and a joggled butt-purlin roof. The tie-beam to the southeast of the threshing bay has failed and has been repaired with timber, and the resulting spreading of the wallplates has been addressed with timber splints on the northeast wallplate. Three of the original four arched braces to the tie-beams are still present. An inserted floor is located in the northwest bay.
