Description
This barn, located approximately 20 metres northwest of Butler's Farmhouse, dates back to around 1600 and has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of corrugated iron. The barn has five bays arranged east to west, featuring a midstrey to the north and a hipped roof at both ends. Notable architectural details include jowled posts, curved tension bracing set into heavy studs, and short edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates. The roof structure consists of clasped purlins with curved wind bracing.
The alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries include the addition of the midstrey, the replacement of arched braces to the tiebeams with hanging knees, and the construction of a base wall made of red brick in English bond, approximately 0.90 metre high. There is some fire damage visible in the studs of the two eastern bays of the south wall, and the eastern end of the roof is charred but remains structurally sound.
