Description
Number 2 Brook Cottage and the adjacent cottage to the north are houses that have been converted into two cottages. They date from the 17th century or earlier and were altered in the 19th century. The buildings are timber framed, plastered, and have roofs made of handmade red clay tiles. They consist of four bays facing east, featuring an internal stack near the middle against the rear wall and a 19th-century internal stack at each end.
To the left, the building has been extended in the 18th or 19th century and divided into cottages, with two additional extensions to the rear. The structure is one storey high with attics, containing four 19th-century casement windows and four more in gabled dormers. There are two boarded doors, each with a small pane of glass and a shallow hood supported by profiled brackets. The main stack has a diagonally arranged shaft.
Inside, the right bay features longitudinal joists of horizontal section, while the next bay has a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and square joists. There is a large wood-burning hearth with a mantel beam that is also chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. The building has jowled posts and cambered tiebeams. Originally, it was one storey with a minimal loft, but the walls have been raised by approximately one metre, likely in the late 17th or 18th century.
