Description
Nos 1 and 2 Hillside are a pair of attached cottages dating from the 18th century, located on the south side of Church Hill in Finchingfield. They feature a plastered timber frame, with No 1 on the right having new render and pargetted panels. The cottages have thatched roofs with half-hipped ends and brick axial and gable end stacks.
The plan consists of two rooms in each cottage, with the central rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces in a central axial stack. The outer rooms were originally unheated, but No 1 now has an end stack. There are small later rear outshuts.
The exterior is one storey with attics and has a three-window north front, which was likely originally symmetrical. No 2 on the left has a plank door with a small pentice board canopy and a four-pane window to the right. No 1 features 20th-century two and three-light casements, while both cottages have two half dormers that break the eaves with 19th-century two-light casements. No 2 has eyebrow thatch, and No 1 has a slate raking roof. Additionally, No 2 has 19th-century casements on the east gable ends and two small lean-to outshuts at the rear, with corrugated asbestos roofs.
Inside No 1, both ground floor rooms have unchamfered axial beams and unchamfered joists, with exposed wall and partition framing, a small brick fireplace with a segmental arch, and winder stairs beside the stack. The roof is ceiled, but the rafters and wall plate are exposed. The interior of No 2 has not been inspected.
