Description

Brookfield Cottage and Chequers is a late 17th-century house, incorporating the structure of an earlier building, with 19th-century alterations and an addition. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with light red brick and painted brick sections. Brookfield Cottage originally had a thatched roof, now corrugated iron, while the rest of the building has slated roofs. The original plan comprised three units, with a cross passage at the lower end of the hall. The hall was rebuilt to the north, retaining the original open hearth which is now sealed. The ceiling beams remain. There are end stacks to Chequers, including a former red brick ridge stack backing the left-hand stack. A half-glazed door is located to the left, with four ground-floor windows. A large gabled dormer window is positioned above; a 19th-century door is on the right, with two ground-floor and two first-floor windows featuring twelve-paned hung sashes in flush frames. The interior features chamfered boxed ceiling beams and relined, sealed back-to-back hearths.
