Description

Springhill Farmhouse is a house that was formerly a farmhouse, dated 1629 on the mantel beam above the hearth. It has undergone alterations and additions in the late 18th century, early 19th century, and further changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring some original pargetting on the rear elevation, and is finished in painted brick. The main range has a Collyweston slate roof, while other sections have slated and plain tiled roofs.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics and originally had a three-unit lobby entry plan, which was partly demolished in the 19th century to make way for a two-storey addition to the southeast and 20th-century rear outshuts. The main entrance is located on the right side and features a six-panelled door, while the former entrance by the stack has been blocked. To the left, there is a canted bay window with hung sashes, accompanied by two sixteen-paned hung sash windows. The first floor includes one 17th-century leaded light window, which is similar to a window on the rear elevation, and there are also two sixteen-paned and two twelve-paned hung sash windows. The house has two gabled dormer windows with casements.

Notable interior features include a boxed staircase leading to the attic floor, two back-to-back open hearths with baking ovens—one of which has a moulded mantel beam—and a central room with a dated beam and carved roundels that are repeated on the moulded ceiling beams. There is also a sealed three-light ovolo moulded attic window. A fine 17th-century boarded door with a scored geometric pattern and original fleur de lis hinges can be found on the rear elevation.
