TL 73 SW FINCHINGFIELD WETHERSFIELD ROAD (south side)

4/107 Barn approx 25 metres west of Nortofts Farmhouse (Formerly listed as Barn 21.12.67 at Nortofts under Outlying Items) - II*

Barn. Late C16, altered in C17 and C20. Timber framed, mainly plastered, part weatherboarded, roofed with plastic-coated corrugated iron. 5 bays aligned NW-SE, with 2 aisles. C17 midstrey to NE. Original brick plinth, of red brick in English bond, approx. 1 metre high on SW side where land falls away to a ditch, 0.5 metre high and plastered on NE side, and exposed below all arcade posts. Jowled posts. Edge-halved and bridled scarfs in wallplates and arcade plates. Heavy studding with curved braces trenched to the outside. Arched braces to tiebeams and arcade plates. Straight raking shores to arcade posts. Normal assembly at eaves. Clasped purlin roof with serpentine wind bracing, a rare feature. Damaged by whirlwind in 1982, tiles removed then and replaced by present roof cladding, but frame undamaged. An exceptionally complete frame of high quality, the only surviving building of a former manorial complex. RCHM 9.
