Description

This building is a barn located about 40 metres southeast of Whitensmere Farmhouse, dating from the 17th century. It features a weatherboarded timber frame set on a brick plinth, topped with a corrugated iron sheet roof that has gabled ends.

The barn has three bays, with an aisle on the north side and a midstrey on the south side leading to a central threshing bay. The south front includes a gabled midstrey at the centre with double doors, flanked by later lean-to outshuts on either side. The roof at the rear extends over the aisle, which has a blocked central doorway.

Inside, the barn has wall and arcade posts without jowls, while the aisle-posts are jowled. The walls are close-studded with a midrail and straight tension braces, and there are curved braces supporting the tie beams. The purlins are clasped in the angles of the collars and principal rafters, with rafters pegged at the apex. The midstrey features a similar roof and wall construction. The timber frame of the barn is complete.
