Rudi'S Restaurant

Rudi’s Restaurant is a 16th-century house that has been altered in the early 19th and 20th centuries and is now used as a restaurant with living space above. It is timber-framed, with plaster rendering and a slate roof. The original plan was for four bays aligned north-west to south-east, facing north-east, with a central axial stack and a later 20th-century stack at the rear. The front two bays were increased from two to three stories in the early 19th century. The rear two bays, which were originally two stories high, have had their upper floor removed. The ground floor has two 20th-century splayed bay windows. The first and second floors have two early 19th-century sash windows with sixteen panes each, fitted with 20th-century louvered shutters. A central six-panel door with the top two panels glazed is accessed via a continuous canopy. The front section has a shallow-pitched pyramidal roof. The main stack has two grouped diagonal shafts. Internally, the building has been significantly altered. The central stack is of 16th-century brickwork, which has been sanded smooth where visible. Most of the front block is plastered internally, with an early 19th-century staircase leading to the second floor. In the rear bays, the timber framing is exposed, although much has been replaced. A ground floor window with three diamond mullions, which is original and unglazed, remains in the right-hand wall.
