Description
Chapel Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with extensions added in the 20th century. It is timber-framed, with plaster infill and a roof of handmade red clay tiles. Originally consisting of two bays aligned north-south, it was possibly built as an extension to Castle House, now a separate property. A 20th-century extension to the north extends eastward, creating an L-shaped layout. The house is two stories high.
The east elevation features a splayed bay and several casement windows, a mix of 20th-century and a single 19th-century example. A glazed door is also present. The south elevation includes casement windows on both floors, a pentice board, and high side purlins protruding through the gable. The west elevation retains the head of an original oriel window, showing mortices for four mullions and three diamond saddle bars, a notably rare feature with ovolo moulding.
The house exhibits jowled posts and close studding. Inside, there are chamfered transverse and axial beams with lamb's tongue stops, along with plain joists of vertical section. An underbuilt jetty to the south has a single plain bracket. The original ceiling above the first floor has tiebeams and bridging beams also chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. A large wood-burning hearth has a chamfered mantel beam, reduced to accommodate a 20th-century grate. The roof is a clasped purlin roof.
