Description

Fishpits is a 17th-century house located on Fishpits Lane in Bures Hamlet. The building is constructed of painted brick in Flemish bond and is topped with handmade red clay tiles. It features four bays facing southeast, with an axial chimney stack that creates a lobby entrance. There is a timber-framed 17th-century wing at the rear right, which was raised in the 18th century, and a 20th-century wing at the rear left, forming a half-H plan. Between these wings is a single-storey lean-to added in the 20th century. An 18th-century external oven is located at the right end of the main range.

The house has two storeys, with three 20-light 20th-century sash windows on the ground floor and three 16-light late 18th-century sash windows on the first floor. A 20th-century door is situated at the front of the gabled porch, and both ends of the roof are half-hipped.

Inside, the partitions are timber-framed with primary straight bracing. In the right bay, there is a chamfered axial beam with lamb's tongue stops and plain joists with a vertical section. The middle room contains a transverse beam and plain joists with a horizontal section. In the left bay, there is a plain beam, originally plastered over but now exposed, with joists plastered to the soffits. The floor of the bread oven has been removed for a central heating boiler, but the walls and arched roof of the oven remain intact.
