Description

BURES HAMLET FISHPITS LANE TL 83 SE (east side) 4/41 Polstead's Farmhouse II House. Late C16. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 4 bays facing SW, with axial chimney stack one bay from right end. C20 in-line extension to left. 2 storeys. 5-window range of C20 casements. C20 door in C15 moulded doorcase with 4-centred arched head, introduced from The Angel Inn, Kelvedon. On upper floor of right return wall, original window with 2 ovolo mullions; C20 reproduction window below it. The interior has jowled posts and heavy studding. In right bay, lodged floor of longitudinal plain joists of horizontal section. In middle room, transverse beam with plain joists of horizontal section. Face-halved and bladed scarf in wallplate. Roof of clasped purlin construction with original partition of wattle and daub. This house was formerly occupied by Harry Forrester, author of 'Timber Framed Houses of Essex', 'The Smaller Queen Anne and Georgian House', 'Medieval Gothic Mouldings', etc., who was responsible for the introduction of the C15 doorway.
