Description
Clay Wall House is a house dating from the early 17th century or earlier, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame that is plastered and a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. The house is arranged in four bays, aligned northwest to southeast, with a northeast aspect. There is an axial chimney stack located in the second bay from the southeast, which forms a lobby entrance, and an external chimney stack at the northwest end. The building has two rear wings and a lean-to extension in the western angle. It stands two storeys high and has a six-panel door, with the top two panels glazed, set within a Tuscan porch. There is one tripartite double-hung sash window with a configuration of 2-4-2 lights, dating from the late 19th century, along with three double-hung sash windows with four lights, also from the late 19th century. On the first floor, there are five similar sash windows. At the base of the main chimney stack, there are two recessed panels with the date 1614 inscribed in modern plaster. The chimney has four octagonal shafts that have been rebuilt at the top. The roof is hipped at the southeast end only.
