Description

Portobello Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber-framed and clad in weatherboarding, with a thatched roof. The house originally comprised two bays aligned roughly north-south, with an axial chimney stack in the north bay, and a two-bay crosswing to the north, forming an L-shaped plan. A 19th-century external chimney stack is located on the north wall. An early 20th-century extension with a slate roof was added to the east of the crosswing, and a later 20th-century flat-roofed extension to the east of the north-south range. The cottage is single-storey with attics.

The west elevation includes a 20th-century glazed door, one tripartite double-hung sash window of 2-4-2 lights, a double-hung sash window of 4 lights, and another window on the first floor, all dating from the late 19th century. A recessed panel is visible in the base of the main chimney stack.

Inside, the cottage features jowled posts and heavy studding. The floor of the north-south range has plain-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, and vertical section joists jointed to these beams using soffit tenons with diminished haunches. The floor of the crosswing was rebuilt in the 18th century. A large hearth constructed of 17th-century bricks remains.
