Description
The Steeple Bumpstead War Memorial commemorates the First World War, unveiled in December 1920, with a later addition for the Second World War. It is prominently situated in the centre of the village, opposite the Grade II*-listed Moot Hall. The memorial comprises a granite Latin cross set on a square, two-stepped granite plinth, which in turn sits on a two-stepped limestone base. The horizontal arms of the cross are incised with the words "LEST WE FORGET" and the dates 1914 – 1919. The top section of the plinth bears the inscription "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ STEEPLE BUMPSTEAD WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR," and the second tier bears the names of those who died in the First World War. An angled stone plaque on the upper step of the base is inscribed "ALSO OF THE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945" and includes the names of those who died in the Second World War. The boundary wall to the rear and sides of the memorial, and the metal railings to the front, are not considered to be of special architectural or historic interest and are excluded from the listing.
