Description
Portobello House is a timber-framed house dating to the late 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is aligned approximately north-south and faces west. The original structure comprised four bays, with an axial chimney stack in the second bay from the south end. An 18th-century stair tower is located to the east of the chimney stack. A 19th-century extension with a catslide roof now encloses the stair tower on the east side. The house has two storeys and a cellar. The main entrance is a 4-panel door with glazed upper panels and a triglyph frieze, dating to the 18th century. The west front features a splayed bay of double-hung sash windows with 2-2-2 lights, along with three other double-hung sash windows with 2, 4, and 4 lights respectively, all dating to the late 19th century. The first floor has four more sash windows with 4, 2, 2, and 4 lights. Inside, the ground floor contains a plain-chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops, a large wood-burning hearth facing north, and an 18th-century semi-circular recessed cupboard to the south of the hearth. The walls were raised by approximately 1.70 metres in the 18th century, and the roof was rebuilt at that time. Above the first floor, plain-chamfered axial beams feature simple concave stops.
