Description
The Red Lion Public House is an inn that dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame that is roughcast rendered, with a facade of red brick laid in Flemish bond, and is topped with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building consists of four bays arranged approximately east to west, with a central chimney stack located one bay from the west end, which is from the 17th century. There is a parallel range to the south from the 18th century and a rear extension at the east end with its own axial chimney stack from the 19th or 20th century. Additionally, there are single-storey extensions to the west from the 20th century.
The facade is symmetrical and features a plastered dado. The entrance consists of a six-panel door set within a doorcase that has panelled reveals and a dentilled open pediment, along with a fanlight that has radiating tracery. There are two pairs of double-hung sash windows with six-light upper sashes and one-light lower sashes, all under segmental brick arches. On the first floor, there are three double-hung sash windows with two-light upper sashes and one-light lower sashes, also under segmental brick arches. Both roofs of the building are hipped.
Inside the rear range, there are plain-chamfered axial beams with plain stops and a clasped purlin roof. The front range has transverse and axial beams that are boxed in. A sale catalogue from 1887, which is framed and displayed in the bar, describes the building as The Lion commercial inn, which was then part of the Bower Hall estate.
