Description

This is a barn located 70 metres south of Great Loyes Farmhouse, dating from around 1300 and repaired in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof covered in red clay 'Roman' tiles and handmade red clay plain tiles. The barn has five bays, aisled on both sides, and is aligned north-northwest to south-southeast, featuring large doors on both sides of the middle bay. The ends and areas over the great doors are hipped and roofed with plain tiles, while the main pitches are covered with 'Roman' tiles.

Architectural details include jowled arcade posts, arched braces connecting to tiebeams and arcade plates, and various types of scarfs in the arcade plates. The aisle walls have unjowled posts and primary straight bracing, which were rebuilt in the 18th century or later. Part of the east-north-east aisle wall has been concreted. The clasped purlin roof, which was rebuilt in the 17th century or later, contains some re-used smoke-blackened rafters from a medieval hall. There are also oblique trenches for passing braces in some arcade posts and aisle ties, which terminate in mortices in the tiebeams. Overall, this barn has retained much of its original structure, although some timbers have been replaced during later repairs.
