Description
This barn, located 15 metres south-west of Leapingwell's Farmhouse, dates back to the early 17th century. It is constructed with a timber frame, featuring plaster and weatherboarding, and is roofed with corrugated iron. The barn consists of five bays aligned northeast to southwest, with an original aisle to the southeast and an original midstrey to the northwest. There is a lean-to extension in the northern angle. The northeast end is plastered and shows one collar, the ends of an arcade-plate, a wallplate, and two purlins projecting, along with a small window in the gable. The original great doors are located at the midstrey, while the southwest end has large sliding vehicle doors added in the 20th century. The structure features jowled posts, straight bracing that is trenched inside heavy studding above the girts, and no bracing below the girts. The arcade braces are nearly straight, and there are near-straight braces to the tiebeams, with only three of the original eight still in place. A face-halved and bladed scarf joint is present in the arcade-plate, and some original wattle and daub infill can be found inside the weatherboarding. The roof is supported by clasped purlins.
