Description

This is a barn located 20 meters southeast of Rook Hall Farmhouse, dating from the early to mid 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The barn is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a roof primarily covered in corrugated asbestos, though part of it features handmade red plain tiles and red clay 'Roman' tiles. It consists of five bays aligned northwest to southeast, with a 17th-century midstrey that has a roof of plain tiles positioned to the northeast of the second bay from the northwest end. At the southeast end, there is an 18th-century one-bay extension with a hipped roof. Only the northeast bay is roofed with 'Roman' tiles; the rest of the main structure has asbestos roofing. The barn features jowled posts, curved braces set at a low pitch, and heavy studding that is trenched outside. The wallplates have edge-halved and bridled scarfs. Three original arched braces to the tiebeams are still in place, while the others have been replaced with bolted knees. The partition between the first bay and the rest of the barn is not original. The roof, which was originally of crownpost form, was rebuilt in the 17th century to a clasped purlin design, with jowled posts and the original clasped purlin roof still present in the midstrey.
