Description
This barn, located 40 meters north-west of Rookery Farmhouse, dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and was built in two stages. The structure consists of a 3-bay barn at the east end with an aisle on the north side, and a higher 5-bay extension that is unaisled. It is timber-framed and weatherboarded. The lower section features a glazed pantiled roof, while the higher section has asbestos sheeting; both sections were originally thatched. The north wall has boarded barn doors at the center bay.
The east section has depleted framing but retains storey posts, wall-plates, and most of the clasped-purlin roof. One open truss shows reversed assembly, indicating an early alteration. The higher section has well-preserved framing, characterized by close-studding with tension stud-bracing and a middle-rail. One open truss includes arch-bracing, while the others feature 19th-century bolted knees. The roof is windbraced with clasped purlins, and nearly all the studs and many rafters have been reused from a medieval building. At the time of the survey, the east section was in the process of being converted into a dwelling.
