Description

Ashen House is a house that dates from the 16th century or earlier, which was restyled in the 18th century and has 19th-century additions. It is timber framed and roughcast, with a roof made of handmade red clay tiles. The building has an L-plan layout, consisting of a three-bay main range facing southeast, featuring an internal chimney stack at the southwest end, and a northeast crosswing that extends to the rear with an external stack on the northeast side. The house has two storeys and attics.

The entrance features a half-glazed door set in an eared doorcase with a moulded hood supported by brackets, dating from the 18th century, along with two 20th-century bay windows. On the first floor, there are four double-hung sash windows, each with 12 lights, which are from the late 18th century. The crosswing has a hipped roof with dentilled eaves on the southeast and northeast sides only.

Inside, the house contains early 18th-century pine panelling and some late 16th-century oak panelling. Although the timber frame is mostly hidden by plaster and panelling, one jowled post with a chamfered arch-brace is visible. The roof features butt-purlins and includes some re-used smoke-blackened timber. The house is situated on a moated site.
