Description

The Town Hall, formerly Stanley House, was built in the mid-19th century. It is a double-fronted building with three windows. The construction is of gault brick with rusticated stone dressings. A stone console-bracketted cornice runs along the top, finished with a blocking course, and continuous stone cill strings are present. The windows are square-headed with sash and casement styles. The second floor windows have architraves, the first floor windows have bracketted cornices, and the central second-floor window has a three-light pediment. The ground floor windows are three-light and have rusticated surrounds. The central doorway is of Venetian design, featuring a rusticated archivolt, side lights, a fanlight, and a panelled door. A round-arched side entrance is also present, with a rusticated surround, fanlight, and panelled door. Balustraded balconies are positioned in front of the first-floor windows. The Town Hall forms a group with numbers 3 to 5, the Free Church, and the Golden Lion Hotel.
