Description
The Golden Lion Hotel is a Grade II listed building located on Market Hill, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. This three-storey hotel features two-storey wings and has a double-fronted design with five windows. The roof is hipped and slated, with bracketed projecting eaves. The exterior is made of painted brick with block dressings and plain bands at each floor level.
On the second floor, there are round-arched casement windows, while the first floor has segmental-arched sash windows that include margin lights and cast iron balconies. The ground floor features a central archway that leads into the Inn Yard, which is now roofed over but still showcases elaborate cast iron balconies on the galleries. A figure of a golden lion is displayed on a bracketed stand at the second floor level.
The Golden Lion Hotel is part of a group that includes Nos. 3 to 5, the Free Church, and the Town Hall.
