Description
St Ives Cross of Sacrifice is a replica of the original Cross of Sacrifice, designed by Sir Reginald Bromfield for the Imperial War Graves Commission and unveiled on 11th November 1920.
The monument features an octagonal cross that stands on an octagonal plinth, which is supported by a three-stepped octagonal base and platform. Constructed of limestone, the cross includes a bronze sword on its west side and measures 24 feet 6 inches in height. Metal railings were added to the platform later, but these are not part of this assessment.
The octagonal plinth has an inscription that reads: "MEN OF / ST IVES / WHO HAVE / FALLEN / IN THE / GREAT WAR / MDCCCCXIV / MDCCCCXVIII." Additionally, the south elevation of the plinth bears the inscription: "WE HERE / HIGHLY RESOLVE / THAT THESE DEAD / SHALL NOT / HAVE DIED / IN VAIN." The plinth lists seventy-four names of those who fell in the First World War (1914-1918) and thirty-one names of those who fell in the Second World War (1939-1945) are inscribed on the base.
