Description
Whispers School is a Vernacular Revival house built between 1864 and 1865, formerly known as Stonely Grange. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring a complex plan with cellars. Two main ranges flank an open courtyard to the west and north, connected by a garden wall to the north-west stable block and yard. It is constructed from locally made red brick laid in English bond, with rendered, timber-framed attic gables. The roofs are covered with plain tiles and feature side stacks with offsets and tall patterned brick shafts.
The main entrance facade includes a projecting wing to the north-east, which extends to form a low range dairy block with a parapet gable. There are three gables adorned with decorated bargeboards and drop finials, along with a moulded brick and wooden cornice. A small turret is situated at the angle of the two ranges, linked by a lean-to to an open gabled porch that has a double half-glazed door set in a shallow two-centred arch. To the right of the porch is a side stack featuring vertical brick banding on the shaft. The building has casement windows of varying sizes, all with wooden frames and ovolo mullions.
The stable block is L-shaped, constructed of local red brick with a plain tile roof, and features a wooden louvre topped with a pyramidal cap, ball finial, and weather vane. This stable block is connected by a contemporary garden wall and archway to the dairy wing of the house.
