Description

Lower Skilts Farm features a former gatehouse, which has been converted into a stable, along with an attached farm building and wall located approximately 40 metres west of the farmhouse. The structures date from around 1560 to 1570, with a central range added in the mid to late 19th century and extensive alterations made over time. The buildings are constructed of dark red English bond brick with blue brick diapering, along with 19th-century red brick, and they have 19th-century tiled roofs. The gatehouse, positioned on the right, is two storeys high and consists of one bay. It has a central blocked chamfered four-centred stone archway with irregular jambs. Above this, there is a 19th-century hayloft door featuring a wooden lintel and a brick segmental relieving arch. The right side of the gatehouse has a large external stack, although the shaft is missing. At the rear, there are three bays with a 19th-century central doorway and two windows, all under brick segmental arches. An incised stone sundial is located above the door, and there is a hayloft door to the left with a window to the right. The openings were boarded up at the time of resurvey, and the roof level may have been altered.

The central single-storey range has a wide opening and two windows. To the left is a 16th-century building that is one storey and has an attic, although it has likely been reduced in height; it consists of one bay. This building features a central plank door and an upper door to the right, with a one-window range on the left side. There are also blocked two-light chamfered stone mullioned windows. The wall attached to the left has tile coping and is partially patched in 19th-century brick, with a gauged brick flat arch gateway.

These buildings are part of a group that includes another building, an attached barn, and a section of wall. Together, they represent the remains of a house and outbuildings that replaced the Grange of Studley Priory.
