Description
The School House comprises a former school building and an attached pair of cottages, likely dating from the mid to late 18th century with 19th-century additions to the rear, and the cottages themselves from the early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, with the cottages whitewashed, and has slate hipped roofs with boxed eaves and brick stacks. The architectural style is Gothick. The original schoolroom was a single classroom, later expanded by the addition of a second. The front of the school features a three-window range and an entrance in the left return side, with a porch containing a pointed arched doorway and a four-centred six-panelled door. The windows throughout are Gothick, featuring ogee arches, casements with two arched lights, and glazing bars. The rear elevation displays similar windows under brick segmental arches. The schoolroom’s interior contains a deeply coved ceiling. The cottages have a double-depth plan and are arranged over two storeys with a three-window range, including a blind central window. Later 20th-century glazed doors and porches have been added. The interior of the cottages was not inspected.
