Description

Farmhouse. Dating from the late 16th century, with additions made in the 17th century to the right and in the late 17th century to the rear, it was partly refaced and altered in the 18th and 19th centuries, with 20th-century alterations also occurring. The building is timber framed, exhibiting close studding, square framing, and ornamental panelling, with lath and plaster and whitewashed brick infill. Much of the exterior has been rebuilt or refaced in whitewashed brick, with some roughcast sections. It has an old tile roof, with brick internal, ridge, and end stacks. The building has a complex plan, with the main range being one storey and attic high, and a wing two storeys high, featuring a three-window front. The main range has a central entrance with a late 20th-century half-glazed door and an open timber and tiled porch. A second entrance to the right has a plank door and a tile hood. A former door, now a window, is located in the re-entrant angle. The fenestration is irregular, with one 19th-century casement window and 20th-century leaded lights. A gabled half-dormer is present. A central stack, constructed of thin bricks and featuring two shafts with V-pilasters, is prominent. An end stack is also present. A far-projecting wing is located to the left, with a jettied first floor underbuilt in roughcast brick. The first floor of the wing exhibits herringbone framing, and the gable features ornamental panelling with roughcast infill. The wing also has 19th-century three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows containing painted latticed lights. The return sides display close studding and small 2-light wood mullioned leaded windows. The right return side has an internal stack with a 19th-century shaft, while the left return side shows an 18th-century staircase projection and some square framing beyond. The right return side of the main range has a framed gable. The rear of the building exhibits some exposed framing and gables. Inside, the building retains its exposed framing and queen post roofs. Two rooms in the left range have 16th-century fireplaces with chamfered stone lintels. One room includes a 16th-century stud partition opened into an adjoining room, which has an open fireplace with a chamfered bressumer, along with stop-chamfered ceiling beams and joists. Flagstone floors are also present. The kitchen has an open fireplace, and a small early to mid 18th-century quarter turn staircase with turned balusters exists alongside some early 18th-century panelling. Winder and straight flight staircases with old boards are also included. A first-floor room in the left wing has early to mid 18th-century panelling with simple pilasters flanking a simple stone chimneypiece. One room has an 18th-century panelled dado, and a cheese room has a composition floor. Original plank doors with strap hinges, as well as 18th-century fielded two- and four-panelled doors with H and H-L hinges, are found throughout the property.
