Description

Arkland is an asymmetrical 2-storey farmhouse built around 1830, featuring a detached small courtyard steading to the rear (west). The building is constructed from whin rubble with ashlar dressings and is whitewashed, with roofs covered in graded slates.

Originally, the house was an east-facing single-storey, 3-bay cottage with Tudor hood-moulds and crow-stepped gables. It was significantly enlarged to the south and east, likely by Charles Howitt around 1860. The original central door has been converted into a window, and a gabled wall-head dormer has been added. The southern addition has 2-bay elevations with bipartite windows and gabled wall-head dormers. The east elevation features an advanced gable with a gabled porch in the re-entrant angle and saw-toothed skews. The west (rear) wing was originally single-storey and includes a cantilevered forestair and a later porch on the west gable. The house has sash windows throughout, with small-paned glazing in the circa 1860 windows and otherwise 12-pane glazing.

The steading is built around a cobbled quadrangular courtyard and consists of two L-plan blocks separated by courtyard entries. The tall north range includes a cartshed and a segmental-arched barn door leading to the courtyard, with other openings being square-headed. It features boarded and glazed loft openings and slit ventilators. The other ranges are mostly single-storey, with the west range being taller at the north, also featuring boarded and glazed loft openings and straight skews.
