Description

The Chatteris War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure and associated railings, unveiled in 1920. It was designed by W Samuel Weatherley and sculpted by Messrs. A Robinson & Son, in memory of those who fell in the First and Second World Wars.

The memorial is made of limestone and features a cross with a square-plan lantern on top of an octagonal-plan tapered pillar. It stands on a square-plan plinth and an octagonal-plan base, which is set on a two-step platform. The platform is surrounded by a semi-circular paved area, which was re-paved around 2010, and is enclosed by wrought-iron railings.

At the rear (east) of the memorial, there is a tripartite plinth wall that lists the names of 158 individuals who died in the First World War. The north and south faces of the memorial's plinth bear the names of 38 individuals who fell in the Second World War. The front (west) elevation of the plinth is inscribed with the words: ‘TO THE UNDYING MEMORY / OF THE CHATTERIS MEN / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WARS / 1914-1918 / 1939-1945’. The rear (east) elevation reads: ‘LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND / WE FOR ENGLAND DIED’. The base has the inscription: ‘GOD GAVE THEM A GREAT THING TO DO AND THEY DID IT’, and the upper step of the platform is inscribed: ‘AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER THEM’.

The memorial is located to the west of the Church of SS Peter and Paul, which is listed at Grade I, and is adjacent to Market Hill.
