Description
No. 8 Claygate is a cottage dating from the early to late 18th century, which underwent restoration in the mid to late 20th century. Originally a timber-framed structure, it has been repaired with brick, and the gable end facing the road has also been rebuilt in brick and painted. The cottage features a long straw thatched roof with a half-hipped end facing the road. It was originally designed as a three-bay, lobby entry type with the gable end to the road and consists of one storey and an attic, with two dormer windows. The windows and doors, including the one leading to the lobby entry, are all from the 20th century. In the late 18th century, the cottage was extended by one bay, which is also constructed of brick and features a tumbled parapet gable end with an end stack. Inside, there are some inserted timbers, but original pegholes can still be seen in the rear wall plate. The cottage is included for its group value.
